In
recent years, cultivation and development projects have destroyed much of the
forest area in and around Embilipitiya. Such destruction has had a severe impact
on the environment. In order to mitigate the effect, the Sri Bodhiraja
Foundation has set up several environmental programmes. As part of the
reforestation programme, several plots of land around 50 acres are reserved from
the government’s authorities and used for planting trees to create a forest
for the future. Education on the
importance of reforestation is conducted for the villagers. Trees are planted
along the roadsides and other public areas. The Foundation also houses a nursery
that distributes plants free of charge to the villagers. Villagers are also
taught the harmful effects of the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Birthday Tree Planting
Scheme
The
Foundation has initiated a scheme for the children in the village to commemorate
their birthdays in a worthy way. Instead of limiting it to a formal celebration,
children and parents are guided to plant a tree; plants are provided by the
nursery at the center. Such an act signifies the gift of life and adds a new
meaning to each child’s special day.
